About the film
"Waiting for Superman" is a new film about America's education system by Davis Guggenheim, the Academy Award-winning director of "An Inconvenient Truth" - a movie that took on the issue of climate change, and changed the way many Americans think about the issue. Scheduled for release in the UK on 26 November, the documentary follows five young people and their parents as they try to leave their neighbourhood public (state) schools for higher-performing public charter schools. The showing of the film comes only two weeks after Secretary of State Arne Duncan visited Michael Gove in London to share ideas and thinking about education policy. About the British Council for School Environments
The British Council for School Environments (BCSE) is the UK's leading charity in education, design and construction. We are also a membership organisation made up of schools, local authorities, and companies involved in designing, building and managing schools across the UK. We are a forum for exchange, dialogue and advocacy for anyone interested in school and learning environments. We run national conferences, annual school design awards and innovative initiatives such as the Centre for School Design and the Big School Makeover. We are passionate about creating excellent learning environments and work in an advisory capacity to a range of organisations across the UK, Europe and Worldwide. In December 2010 we are setting up a “UK-USA learning network” to share knowledge and learning in education, design and innovation to coincide with a major study tour and events in New York and New Jersey.
About Teach First
Teach First is an independent charity which transforms the life chances of children from all backgrounds by recruiting and supporting exceptional graduates to teach and lead in schools in challenging circumstances across the UK. Studies show that in the UK, socio-economic status still determines whether young minds fulfill their potential. In 2008 only 24% of students receiving free school meals achieved the benchmark 5 A* - C grades at GCSE – less than half the average rate. Young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds are also less likely to apply to university and are therefore less represented in higher education. By giving exceptional graduates the opportunity to teach and make a difference in schools in challenging circumstances, Teach First equips tomorrow’s leaders in all fields with the motivation, skills and understanding to launch a sustainable, whole society assault on educational disadvantage.
About The Sutton Trust
The Sutton Trust was founded in 1997, by Sir Peter Lampl with the aim of promoting social mobility through education. It has funded a wide range of access projects in early years, school and university settings, and now focuses on research, policy and innovative practical projects with a system-wide relevance. The Trust exists to combat educational inequality and prevent the subsequent waste of talent. It is particularly concerned with breaking the link between educational opportunities and family background, and in realising a system in which young people are given the chance to prosper, regardless of their family background, the school they happen to attend or the area in which they live.
About Jennifer Singer Education Design
Jennifer Singer is an independent architect and education design consultant. She provides advice and support to groups starting free schools based on her own experience designing, reviewing and working with schools. Jennifer is involved in a number of collaborations in the UK and internationally to share best practice and lessons learnt in education design. Based in London, Jennifer is originally from Philadelphia, USA.
